Ferruh BAŞAĞA
1914 yılında İstanbul’da doğan sanatçı, 2010 yılında vefat etmiştir. 1922 yılında ailesiyle birlikte Saraybosna’ya taşınan sanatçı, ortaokul ve lise eğitimini burada sürdürmüştür.Teknik lise mezunu
olarak tekrar yurda döndüğünde bir yıl süre ile Beşiktaş Uçak Fabrikası’nda çalışmış ve ardından 1936 yılında İstanbul Devlet Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi’ne girmiştir. Nazmi Ziya Güran ve Leopold
Levy’den eğitim alarak 1940 yılında bu kurumdan birincilikle mezun olan sanatçı, bu dönemde patlak veren İkinci Dünya Savaşı nedeniyle Avrupa’ya gidememiş, 1943 yılında Yüksek Resim
Bölümü’ne kayıt olarak Zeki Kocamemi atölyesinde çalışmalarını sürdürmüştür. Sanatçı “Toplumsal Gerçekçi” bir anlayış çerçevesinde kurulan “Yeni Grubu”nun kurucuları arasında yer almış ve
grubun tüm etkinliklerine katılmıştır. Müstakil Ressamlar ve Heykeltraşlar Birliği üyeliği yapmış, Türk Ressamlar ve Heykeltraşlar Cemiyeti’nde bulunmuş, 1950 yılında Ressamlar Derneği’nin
kurucuları arasında yer almış ve 1970 yılından itibaren Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi’nde vitray ve mozaik atölyelerini kurarak on yıl bu kurumda Öğretim Görevlisi olarak çalışmıştır. Sanatçı, ilk
sergisini İstanbul Beyoğlu Kitap Sarayı’nda açtıktan bir yıl sonra eserleri UNESCO tarafından Musee d’Art Moderne de Ville de Paris’te açılan sergide yer almıştır. Sonraki yıllarda çok sayıda kişisel
sergi açan Başağa’nın eserleri uluslararası fuarlar ve sergilerde yer almıştır. “Aşk”adlı eserinde, figürleri soyutlayarak birer leke halinde resmetmiş ve soyut bir resimle Devlet Resim Sergisi’nde
Birincilik Ödülünü alan ilk sanatçı olmuştur. Başağa, doksan altı yıllık yaşamının büyük bir bölümünü kapsayan sanat yaşamı boyunca İstanbul’daki atölyesinde geometrinin sonsuz estetik
olanaklarını tuvaline yansıtmıştır.
Born in Istanbul in 1914, Ferruh Başağa passed away in 2010. The artist moved to Sarajevo with his family in 1922. After graduating from secondary and technical high school in Sarajevo, he returned
home and started working at Beşiktaş Aircraft Factory. Later he entered Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts in 1936. After getting courses from Nazmi Ziya Güran and Leopold Levy, he graduated from
this school in 1940 at the top of his class. Due to the outbreak of the World War II at that time, he could not go to Europe so he was enrolled in the Department of Advanced Painting in 1943 and carried
out his art work in Zeki Kocamemi’s Atelier. The artist was among the founders of “the New” Group formed with an understanding of “Social Realism” and participated in all the activities of the group.
He was a member of the Union of Independent Painters and Sculptures and co-founder of Turkish Painters and Sculptures Association.. in 1950. He founded the stained glass and mosaic workshops at
Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts, where he also taught for about ten years as of 1970. The artist held his first exhibition in Istanbul Beyoglu Book Palace in 1945. The following year his works were
displayed at Musee the Paris exhibition of d’Art Moderne de Ville by UNESCO. Başağa opened many other solo exhibitions in years to come and his works were held by various international fairs and
exhibitions. In his work, entitled “Love”, he abstracted figures and painted as stains and became the first artist to win the 1st place award at State Painting Exhibition with an abstract painting. During
his art life covering the greater part of his life which spans over 96 years, he has reflected the endless aesthetic possibilities of geometry in his Istanbul studio.
